National Garden Scheme: Newsletter: Open Gardens for August 2019

 
We are well over halfway through our ‘Open Gardens’ Season already, but there are still some amazing gardens to visit. Now the Dahlia’s, Alstroemeria, Hydrangea, Veronicastrum, and many others come into their own.

Following are some choice gardens, which you might like to visit during August. Several of these gardens also open 'By Arrangement’ for small or larger groups of visitors. It is still not too late for your Club or Group, or even a group of friends, to arrange a private visit, check out the Website. https://www.ngs.org.uk/byarrangement

To start with, here is a stunning garden, which is only open By Arrangement, until Sunday 4th August. There is still time to book a visit to this 2 1/2 acre garden. Groups from 10 to 30 would be welcome. A charming courtyard garden with a raised pond, pots of lilies and hydrangeas cascading over tiered flint walls, leads you up to the 2½ acre garden. The newly developed garden, is designed and maintained by the owners in a setting of mature trees. Enjoy soft coloured planting, a glasshouse with unusual orchids, a tranquil Japanese style pond and jungle walk. This garden offers something for everyone.

As featured on Gardeners' World, a breathtaking garden set in over an acre, which benefits from panoramic views of Watership Down. Surprises await, ranging from traditional herbaceous borders through desert/prairie planting, an enchanted knot garden, potager to exuberant subtropical schemes; featuring bananas, cannas, hedychiums and more. Enjoy teas surrounded by Brugmansia, Figs and Citrus.

This garden is also open By Arrangement for Groups (Garden Clubs, U3A, W I's etc) or even family and friends, for a private visit through July to September. There is a minimum of 20 people - just contact the garden owners to agree a date. WEST VIEW Stockbridge SO20 6EL NEW FOR 2019


½ acre garden designed and constructed by the current owners, built into the natural chalk cliff on levels. 60 steep steps take you up through a series of small garden rooms from pool area, to sun deck, copper garden and white garden. The garden opens up as you get higher, culminating in a field with wildlife pond, shepherds hut, wild flower area, orchard and spectacular views of the Test Valley.
Opening Sunday 4th August 10am to 4pm (coinciding with “Stockbridge Trout ’n About Festival) and Wednesday 7th August 1.30 to 4.30. Admission £3.50 children free.

Golden bamboo greets you as you enter our vibrant front garden. Borders overflow with colourful dahlias, cannas, crocosmias, swathes of heleniums and rudbeckias. Exciting exotics contrast with a jungly mix of gunneras, ferns and giant hostas around the tranquil pond and bog garden. Sunny upper borders have dark leaved dahlias with billowing grasses, interesting topiary and wonderful hydrangeas.

LAST MONTH THE THATCHED COTTAGE WELCOMED STUDENTS & STAFF FROM TRELOAR’S IN ALTON.

Two gardens next door to each other - both quite different. One a small organic garden with year round interest, whilst the other is 1 1/2 acres with boarders bursting with cottage garden plants and chickens and ducks wandering around a walnut tree. Both properties C16 (not open) and close to Massey’s Folly and the C11 church.

Captivating ½ acre garden! Recently landscaped, brick paths guide you from cottage to summerhouse to gazebo where climbers from honeysuckle to jasmine attack the senses. Venture past the barn with its sedum roof to the 3½ acre Victorian garden in restoration (wellies are a must), with its mighty oaks, rhododendrons and Monterey pines. 1½ acre garden designed and constructed by current owners. An exceptional range of rare, unusual and architectural plants including a National Collection of Eucalyptus. Dramatic foliage plants from around the world, see plants you have never seen before!
The emphasis is upon difficult and tender plants which look their best in late summer. This is a most imaginative and creative garden to visit for ideas about what to grow and how to display it. For the September opening two or three top quality nurseries provide a huge range of plants for sale and Plant Heritage offers additional rarities.
