Due to the coronavirus restrictions the garden competition will be “virtual” for this year.
  • Any member of an affiliated society can enter.
  • Each entrant is to supply 2 photographs of their garden for judging. Photos will be judged and first, second and third declared, no trophy or prizes but there will be certificates awarded instead.
  • There is no entry fee.
  • Photos will be anonymised (to prevent gnome rustling) and placed on the HFHS website prior to judging.

Peter Maunder Garden Competition Rules and Entry for 2020

Due to the coronavirus restrictions the garden competition will be “virtual” for this year.

• Any member of an affiliated society can enter.  • Each entrant is to supply 2 photographs of their garden for judging. Photos will be judged and first, second and third declared, no trophy or prizes but there will be certificates awarded instead. • There is no entry fee. • Photos will be anonymised and placed on the HFHS website prior to judging.

Judging will be based on the usual criteria as much as possible (remember we can zoom in on the photos!) So take photos that demonstrate as many of the following judging criteria as possible. 

1 Health, vigour, diversity and suitability of plants allowing for difficulty of cultivation (30 points).

2 Suitability of design to the site with the requirements of household usage and the incorporation of the principles of water and top-soil conservation.  (20 points).

3 Visual impact, harmonious planting, with suitable encouragement for wildlife (20 points).

4 Maintenance of paths, fences, walls, ponds, structures, hedges, green areas and working areas.  These could include patios, natural pools, fruit and vegetable plots and woodland gardens (15 points).

5 Cultivation, cleanliness and neatness.  Freedom from pernicious weeds and diseases (15 points).
