Alan Martin reveals all about Weird and Wonderful Plants

NATIONAL GARDEN SCHEME IN HAMPSHIRE: Open Gardens in September. (Plus a Surprise Pop-Up August opening)

We have exciting news this month - one of our Hampshire Gardens has been shortlisted in The Nations Favourite Garden competition. This competition is a joint collaboration with The Country Gardener, Viking Cruises and The National Garden Scheme. By voting you could win a fantastic River Danube Cruise, courtesy of Viking Cruises - so you really have nothing to loose.

LITTLE COURT in Crawley is in the top 5 for the South East Region. Patricia Elkington has been opening her garden for the NGS for many years, and both her, and clearly, her garden are very popular.

Patricia has decided to open again as a ‘ Pop Up’ garden on Sunday 18th August. So why not check it out and see it in its early Autumn dress.

LITTLE COURT Crawley Winchester SO21 2PU

A three acre garden which aims to give continuous calm enjoyment throughout the seasons - opening in February with thousands of crocus and snowdrops - and ending in June with full herbaceous borders. Now as a one off Little Court is opening once again. This is a garden which appeals to all ages, with the tree house and the free range bantams wandering around, which the children love, and for the adults there is a quiet and tranquil atmosphere, with many places to sit with great views. The South facing wildlife field is a magnet for butterflies.

WEIR HOUSE Old Alresford SO24 9DG

Spectacular riverside garden with sweeping lawn backed by old walls, yew buttresses and mixed perennial beds. Contemporary vegetable garden at its height in Sept. Also incl contemporary garden around pool area, bog garden and wilder walkways through wooded areas. Children welcome.

REDENHAM PARK HOUSE Andover SP11 9AQ

Redenham Park built in 1784. The garden sits behind the house (not open). The formal rose garden is planted with white flowered roses. Steps lead up to the main herbaceous borders which peak in late summer. A calm green interlude, a gate opens into gardens with espaliered pears, apples, mass of scented roses, shrubs and perennial planting surrounds the swimming pool.

BERE MILL Whitchurch RG28 7NH

On the Upper Test with water meadows and wooded valleys, this garden offers herbaceous borders, bog and Mediterranean plants, as well as a replanted orchard and two small arboretums. Features Japanese prunus, peonies, wisteria, irises, roses, and semi-tropical planting. The working mill was where Portals first made paper for the Bank of England in 1716.

An Illustrated Talk by Bryan Madders - Unusual Perennials

Thursday 29th August 2019 at 7:30 pm

Bryan Madders is a very keen gardener and judge for the National Dahlia Society.

His particular expertise has been in Dahlias and Chrysanthemums which he has been growing for more than forty years.

On this visit  he will be giving a talk on Unusual Perennials. He has successfully developed a large variety of perennials many of which he has propagated from seed. He promises to provide an interesting insight into some of the lesser known varieties.

We are well over halfway through our ‘Open Gardens’ Season already, but there are still some amazing gardens to visit. Now the Dahlia’s, Alstroemeria, Hydrangea, Veronicastrum, and many others come into their own.

Following are some choice gardens, which you might like to visit during August. Several of these gardens also open 'By Arrangement’ for small or larger groups of visitors. To start with, here is a stunning garden, which is only open By Arrangement, until Sunday 4th August. There is still time to book a visit to this 2 1/2 acre garden. SAGES Alton GU34 3NP

A charming courtyard garden with a raised pond, pots of lilies and hydrangeas cascading over tiered flint walls, leads you up to the 2½ acre garden. The newly developed garden, is designed and maintained by the owners in a setting of mature trees. As featured on Gardeners' World, a breathtaking garden set in over an acre, which benefits from panoramic views of Watership Down. WEST VIEW Stockbridge SO20 6EL NEW FOR 2019

½ acre garden designed and constructed by the current owners, built into the natural chalk cliff on levels. 60 steep steps take you up through a series of small garden rooms from pool area, to sun deck, copper garden and white garden. The garden opens up as you get higher, culminating in a field with wildlife pond, shepherds hut, wild flower area, orchard and spectacular views of the Test Valley.

Golden bamboo greets you as you enter our vibrant front garden. Borders overflow with colourful dahlias, cannas, crocosmias, swathes of heleniums and rudbeckias.
