FW: IDHS newsletter - March/April 2021

With warmer weather on the way I thought I would take advantage of a cloudy day to update you all on various issues and decisions and plans.

Firstly thank you to all who attended our first Zoom meeting in February by Ray Broughton on What Show Judges Look For. He provided lots of useful advice on show judging but also some other helpful hints such as dealing with moss in lawns. One of the members kindly wrote up notes which are attached to this newsletter.

 

Last month we reported we had booked a stall at Frogham Fair where we planned to focus on selling plants given the cancellation  of our May plant sale. Sadly the organisers have decided they cannot go ahead with Frogham Fair as the date is to close to Covid release dates.

 

Plans for release from lockdown are progressing and we have been looking at how to restart the club. Some of our speakers that were booked have advised us that they are no longer doing talks so we have had to revise our programme.

We have decided to go ahead with our speaker in April via Zoom again and hopefully this is a topic that will appeal to more of you. Gerald Ponting is going to do a talk entitled “The Hampshire Calendar” at 7.30pm on Thursday April 29^th  and the invite will be sent out in the week before.

 

As long as the plans for easing lockdown progress, we are planning on having our first meeting back in the hall on Thursday June 24^th which will be an opportunity for members to get together over cake and tea or coffee, pick up the new membership card but there will be no speaker on this occasion. Speakers on a variety of topics have been confirmed for the rest of the year.

Dont forget, we have agreed those members that paid their £6 in 2020 will not be expected to pay again for 2021.

We are also moving to online banking for those of you that prefer to pay this way in the future.

 

We have had some changes on the committee and now looking for a speaker secretary who would book future speakers, confirm details before a meeting and welcome them on the night and thank them afterwards. If you are interested please get in touch with me

We are also looking for a new trip secretary from November so perhaps give this role some thought as well.

 

As you know from recent newsletters, the committee has been agonising over whether we can hold the Show this year as a lot of planning needs to start now. As a result of many discussions, we have taken the difficult decision to cancel the Show this year but watch this space as we are planning on doing something on the day.

National Garden Scheme Hampshire March Newsletter

 

IN HAMPSHIRE

I feel there is a bit more of an air of positivity for us all.  Although we are still not able to fully open our gardens , we still have some March gardens which you can visit if they are local to you.

It is still quite difficult to distribute our popular Yellow Hampshire Booklet, as many of our outlets do still not feel that they are able to display ‘unnecessary’ literature, and our Team Members are not yet able to travel outside their local area’s.  To help to overcome this in Hampshire,  our booklet is available as a pdf file, as a stop-gap until we can distribute our booklets as normal.  This is proving very popular.  You will notice a distinct difference in the booklet this year.  We felt that we should par back the booklet to its bare bones - all the information is there, but no advertisers or photo’s.  If you would like a copy of the Booklet in pdf format, please contact me and I will send it to you.

For March we have three gardens open in Hampshire, plus one pop-up opening.

Due to the current situation refreshments will not be available at any of our gardens throughout March.

Dogwood, cornus and ghost bramble supply spring structure. Gnarled fruit trees provide shelter for bulbs, and wildflowers are making a welcome debut in our meadow strips.

Bantams, bees and birdsong with over 30 bird species noted. Wildlife areas.

IDHS February 2021 newsletter

For once as I write this, it is not raining outside and there are signs aplenty that Spring is on its way – daffodils and other bulbs coming up through the ground, new growth and birds beginning to set up their nests.

In addition, we have finally good news re Covid 19 that the vaccine is beginning to take effect and we may see the loosening of lockdown soon. We await to see what Boris’s plan is tomorrow but it appears that caution is still the watch word.

 

Your committee met last week and have made the painful but sensible decision, given its usual popularity, that it would be pretty impossible to socially distance the plant sale, to cancel the plant sale this May.

However, for those of you starting to plant seeds, we are planning on having our new marquee up at the Frogham Fair on Saturday 26^th June and we will sell plants there.

 

We continue to have spirited discussions about the Show in September and have made the decision that our deadline  for decision making on this will be at our next committee meeting in March. We are exploring lots of ideas and if any members have helpful suggestions we would love to hear them.

 

Now for some good news!

Our next meeting is going to be on Zoom on Thursday 25^th February (this week) at 19.30 hours. Many of you will have experience of using Zoom during lockdown so hopefully lots of you will join.

You just need to click on the link below and if you have used Zoom before you will enter the meeting. If you haven’t used it before, your computer will ask if you wish to load Zoom and the answer is yes, after a short delay, you will join our meeting. Just don’t forget to make sure your volume is on and your video is on (buttons to click will be on your screen )

I will be on the meeting by 19.15 so if you are not familiar, come on early and I can talk you through things or even ring you on the phone to get you connected.

 

If you don’t want to use your computer, you can still join the meeting on your phone by ringing one of the numbers which I will include, and entering the same meeting ID and passcode on your phone keypad. Sadly you wont be able to see the slides but you can hear the talk.

National Gardens Scheme in Hampshire February 2021

Its been a while !!!  But on this bitterly cold day in early February, I thought what better time to think about Gardens !!

I am very aware that many of you are no longe able to hold your various meetings in person, but that you may still be keeping in touch by email or even Zoom.

Here at the National Garden Scheme, we are confident that we will be able to welcome visitors to our gardens again, with no restrictions - albeit  later in the year.  In fact you can still visit gardens now, as part of your daily exercise, providing that you keep local and do not travel out of your area.

Firstly a Happy New Year to all of you in what continues to be strange times. However there is light at the end of the tunnel with the Covid vaccine being rolled out.

Having said that, we have no idea when we will be able to meet up as a club but your committee is continuing to plan ahead. Over the next few months we will have to make some difficult decisions about the plant sale and Annual Show as both of these take some planning. It is fair to say that if they do happen, they may look very different from previous years as we strive to keep you all safe.

 

In the hope that we do have a plant sale in May, can I remind you to save some specimens when splitting plants or sow a few extra seeds if you can.

 

Whilst we have no meeting in January, we are planning to host a Zoom presentation on Thursday 25^th February at 7.30 pm by Ray Broughton who will deliver a shortened talk on “What Show Judges Look For”. The link will be available in the next newsletter and even if you don’t like using the computer you can dial in and listen to the talk. Those details will also be included.

Should the current rules change (unlikely) and you are able to have people in your home, you might like to think about members joining up and watching the presentation.

Sadly, yet again, we have to report the death of a previous member – Pat Downer who was a founder member of the club with her late husband Ken, and was very actively involved with the club for many years. 

Pat was very knowledgeable in all aspects of growing and showing, specialising in Dahlias. Pat, along with her husband, was a very keen Show competitor. Her garden was immaculate.

The committee has sent condolences to her sons on your behalf .

IDHS December newsletter

  

Firstly Merry Christmas to you all although like many, I expect your Christmas may be slightly different from usual!

With the news of an impending vaccine, it is all beginning to look a little more hopeful that we might get back to a “new normal” at some point in 2021.

 

Sadly yet again, I have to report the death of a previous member – Pat Downer who was a founder member of the club with her late husband Ken, and was very actively involved with the club for many years. Pat was very knowledgeable in all aspects of showing and growing, specialising in Dahlias. We have on your behalf sent condolences to her sons.

 

Thank you to all those who turned up on Zoom for the AGM which proved a useful forum to discuss the way forward. We took your comments and had a very useful discussion at the last committee meeting about the merits and pitfalls of trying to run meetings across Zoom until we can get into the Hall again. It is a fine balance to please those that can Zoom and those that are unable or don’t wish to use this programme, whilst recognising that for many club meetings are an important aspect of their social calendars.

 

We have therefore come up with a pragmatic solution and have made agreement with our February speaker, Ray Broughton to deliver a shortened talk on the 25^th at 19.30 ( What Show Judges Look For)  via Zoom and we will take notes to send out to our members who are not able to join this meeting. I would however like to encourage as many of you as possible to try out Zoom, you just click on the link supplied in the email and enter the waiting room and your host allows you into the meeting. You can still join even without a computer, by ringing in to a supplied number and entering codes on your phone. Should the rules allow, you may want to join up in small groups and join the meeting through one computer.

Give it some thought and hopefully we will see lots of you at this meeting.

 

Normally we would be giving you new programmes in December, however as things are subject to change I have included a summary of dates, speakers and talks below planned for the year. As you can see, we are hoping to get back into the hall in April but this will be subject to the latest rules.

We are beginning to plan for both the Plant Sale in May and the Annual Show next year so please don’t forget to split and save excess plants, sow extra seeds in the Spring or keep nurturing any plants you had planned for this years sale.

 

It was mentioned at the AGM but we have a lot of changes planned within the committee this year, so please do consider joining the committee, we need new blood and new ideas to keep your club thriving. Just drop me a line if you would like to explore this.

 

I know some of you have been eagerly awaiting the answers to Pats summer quiz, so wait no longer, the answers are attached. We also have a new quiz from Pat Mouland and an anagram quiz from Ray Wells to test those grey cells over Christmas.

 

Lastly, don’t forget to look at our Blog IDHS blogspot as we still have some garden equipment for sale and lots of other interesting items and pictures.
