IDHS Newsletter - December2021

It was lovely to see some different members at our November AGM and meeting where we were entertained by Dr Francis Burroughs talking about his father and his life in gardening at the beginning of the 1900s.

For those of you not at the AGM there are a few decisions you need to be aware of

  • It was unanimously agreed that Terry and Bren Ings should be asked to become Life Members of the club given their years of dedication and hard work supporting the club.
  • The decision to increase membership fees to £10 was accepted (in light of increased speakers fees and travel costs and hall costs)
  • Following a presentation by your Treasurer, Alan Milburn it was agreed to alter the constitution to cease annual audit of the accounts

Our next meeting is fast approaching and we are delighted that Sandy Dingle can finally give us Part 2 of a Story of Christmas and hopefully you will join us to hear her exciting talk and partake of some food and Christmas punch.  We will be meeting on Thursday 9th December at 7.30pm and will be seating you at tables of six with the food on the table to reduce infection risks.

There will be a raffle as usual and our last competition this year for members will be a table decoration. (There will be no usual members competition). We are hoping for a quiz for the night from our ever popular quiz master – Pat Mouland

You can pick up your new membership cards at the meeting.

We are following the Covid rules of Ibsley Village Hall which are:

  • Please do not attend if you are feeling unwell
  • We would like everyone to wear masks (except the speaker)
  • We would request that you use the sanitiser at the door entry before you sign in
  • We will have a window at the front and back open along with the outside entrance doors open to allow a through draft so please dress accordingly
  • The chairs will be well distanced

As things are changing quite rapidly in regards to the new variant, please check your emails on Thursday before you come to make sure we have not had to cancel at the last minute.

Other news:

We still need members to join the committee, with vacancies for a membership secretary and a communication/media person. If you feel you could help please reply to this email or speak to one of the committee.

Di Barnaby is looking for volunteers to help with the Show in September 2022 so please speak to Di if you can help or email her on dianabarnaby59@gmail.com

As you are looking through the seed catalogues taking inspiration for 2022, don’t forget to save your old open packets of seeds for the Seed Swap. We can take them at any meeting to add to the box or bring them to our meeting in March for our annual Seed Swap.

Finally, on behalf of the Committee, I would like to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a healthy and happy 2022.

IDHS November newsletter

It is that time of year again which sees IDHS undertaking its AGM. As usual the plan is to make it brief and therefore it would be very helpful if members could read all the reports (attached) and come with any questions.

It has been lovely to welcome members back but numbers remain small – we had 20 people at last months talk all well spaced and in a well ventilated hall.

It would be great to hear back from you if you have any questions on your safety or suggestions about how we can make you feel safe to return.

As well as the AGM on Thursday 25th November at 7.30pm we are delighted to welcome back Andrew Harris who gave us a very entertaining talk on Tree Surgery last time and we have more tales and tips from him this time.

We will also have your new membership cards ready for collection at £10 per member with details of all our talks in 2022 and three exciting garden trips.

Don’t forget the usual members competition – we will be awarding the cups in January

The raffle continues but we are going to try some changes this month, drawing tickets during the talk and allocating to the prizes for the winners to pick up

We are following the Covid rules of Ibsley Village Hall which are:

  • Please do not attend if you are feeling unwell
  • We would like everyone to wear masks (except the speaker)
  • We would request that you use the sanitiser at the door entry before you sign in

Plans for Our December Meeting (9th December)

Your committee have been thinking through ideas on how to continue with the social as safely as possible. To this end there will be food put onto each table set up for 6 people which will avoid you queueing up as usual. The members competition in December will be a table decoration, so get planning now!  Should anyone want a small dish and oasis, Sue Hooper will have some for sale at the November meeting for 50p (proceeds to the club)

Our Christmas speaker will be Sandy Dingle who will be continuing  “The Story of Christmas”

Looking forward to seeing you all on November 25th

IDHS September newsletter

It was so nice to see even more members at our August meeting when we had a very informative talk on the Gardens of Tresco.

Our next meeting is this Thursday – 30th September when we have Patricia Elkington coming to talk to us on “The Garden in Autumn”. We will be holding the raffle and this month we will start to offer refreshments.

Don’t forget the usual members competitions, do enter to start collecting points  for our annual awards.

If you have not already collected your membership card, please see Alan, our Treasurer.

Just to remind you we have the following Covid precautions in place:

  • Please do not attend if you are feeling unwell
  • We would like everyone to wear masks (except the speaker)
  • We would request that you use the sanitiser at the door entry before you sign in
  • We will have windows and doors open to allow a through draft so please dress accordingly
  • There will be no refreshments although we are looking to restart these in September with a new format to reduce contact    ( please bring your own water if required)
  • The chairs will be well distanced
  • Please DO NOT help put the chairs away at the end as we have to re-sanitise them before folding

Other News:

We had some very successful willow workshops in September which were very productive and enjoyable. A big thank you to our facilitator Jacqui and Di and Alan for managing the day.

Ray and Pauline Wells have recommended a visit to the New Forest Lavender Farm out at Giles Lane, Landford, SP5 2BG where we have previously had a members visit. The grounds have been (largely) converted in the last 12 months into a magnificent series of gardens and at this time the Dahlias and Zinnias, along with other perennials are a sight to behold. Well worth £4.00 to enter and the cafĂ© does excellent snacks.

Best to watch opening times after end of month (reduced days/hours) and the attached nursery is closed from 1st October.

Donhead Hall in Shaftesbury SP7 9DS is open as part of the NGS scheme this Sunday 3rd October and well worth a visit.

We have now started to plan for next years show on 10th September 2022 and Di is looking for stewards and helpers – we will need about 15 people. If you are able to help please let Di know on dianabarnaby59@gmail.com

Finally, the committee have been reviewing the cost of membership in light of increasing speakers costs and travel costs and have decided that the subscription should rise to £10 per year from 1st January 2022. This equates to approx. 83p per meeting which we believe still represents good value.

Looking forward to seeing you on Thursday

IDHS Newsletter July 2021

Having just listened to the latest news it is looking very hopeful that our meeting will go ahead on Thursday 29th July at 7.30pm when we have Tom Maskell coming to speak to us on “Vegetables – Success on the Plot”.

There will be a further email in the week of the meeting confirming what arrangements will be in place.

In the meantime there is some other news:

It is with sadness that the Club has recently heard of the death of former member Joan Lumley. Joan, who was well into her nineties, died in the middle of June and had been unwell for some time, living in a care home near one of her sons in London. She was a longstanding member of IDHS and was on the Committee for many years . At one time she was the Secretary. Joan contributed many plants for the plant sale and was a keen gardener. When she found heavy gardening too difficult  she put her artistic talents into photography and won the Dapson Cup for Photography   the  very first time it was introduced into the IDHS Show. Thank you Joan for your input into the Club and for happy memories.

 44th Cerne Abbas Open Gardens

Each year we have held Open Gardens in June but this year we delayed to the weekend of 14th & 15th August. It now seems that life will have returned to near normal by then.

Preparations are well underway and we have more than 20 gardens that plan to be open including a number of new ones and, as we have never before opened in August, even the remainder will look very different.

The cost of a Day ticket for all the gardens is £7 and a Two Day ticket £10 with accompanied children free.

We will still plan to have plants for sale for club funds and an opportunity to pick up membership cards.

National Garden Scheme in Hampshire May/June 2021

IN HAMPSHIRE
I’m sure many of you were/are thinking the same as me,  when are these early morning frosts going to stop.   I certainly can’t remember an April with  such a prolonged period of frosts.  It amazes me how tolerant some of the plants are - apart from my ‘Alstroemeria Indian Summer”  that has really curled its toes up.  Still we are all in the same boat.
Undeterred, our gardeners are still toiling away to bring you some stunning gardens.  Below are a few gardens, which are open from 17th May and into June.
NOTE:  Pre-booking is essential for openings before 17th May, after then pre-booking is available, but not essential.
BISTERNE MANOR:     Ringwood   BH24 3BN
Opening:  Thurs 13th, 20th & 27th May   2pm to 5pm
Admission:  £5.00  children free

Maple Cottage is reopening after a 2 yr break, a ½ acre cottage style garden with herbaceous borders, veg plots and a tiny, but very active wildlife pond surrounded by hostas, astilbe, sarracenia and a quirky tree cave for kids. The neighbouring 1 acre contemporary garden at Cherry Tree Barn is just 2 yrs old and is the realisation of the owner’s ideas working with garden designer Fiona Harrison. The area around the thatched barn has been planted with grasses, iris, salvia, euphorbia, phlomis and knautia. Drifts of oxeye daisies and other wildflowers on bunds line the perimeter. Hard landscaping incl terracing, decking, pathways and Japanese influenced Yatsuhashi Bridge through the main border. Small collection of sculptures completes the piece. The tiny garden at Cherry Tree Barn Cottage is full of lovingly attended, colourful pots.
Opening:  Thurs 27th to Sun 30th May   2pm to 5pm
Admission:  £6.50  children free
Refreshments:  Home-made teas.

IDHS May newsletter

Welcome to your latest newsletter, it was either brave the heavy showers to plant out the vegetables or write the newsletter and this won!

Hopefully if all goes according to Boris’s plan we will be leaving lockdown behind on Monday 21st June but yet again this is a wait and see game, depending on the Indian variant.

However, on a positive note if all goes to plan we are looking forward to seeing many of you back in the Hall on Thursday 24th June. We have decided not to have a speaker but to give everyone the opportunity to meet and chat, with a piece of cake and tea or coffee.

We will have the usual raffle and also if you have spare plants you are willing to donate to the club, these will be on sale on the stage. There will also be an opportunity to collect your membership cards for the rest of 2021 and pay your subs for this year if you did not pay in Jan or Feb 2020.

If anyone would be willing to help with refreshments on the day please let me know

Thank you to those who joined our virtual meeting in April when Gerald Ponting gave a very informative talk about what goes on in Hampshire with some beautiful photographs to accompany this. Gerald took us through the year and we found out about the 17th century village in Little Woodham which is open on certain weekends and certainly looks worth a visit, the Winchester Hat Fair with street theatre in July and the Portsmouth Dockyard Victorian Christmas in December, to name a few.

I am delighted to let you know that Anita Evans has agreed to become our programme secretary and our programme for 2022 is progressing well.

Our Treasurer, Alan Milburn has also been busy sorting out internet banking so you can pay your annual subscription directly if you prefer.

The details are as follows:

Account Name: Ibsley and District Horticultural Society

Sort Code:30-96-26

Account Number:42436068

We are looking at holding some workshops in September when we would have had our show and if any of you have either the skills around willow weaving or basketry or know any good contacts, please get in touch.

Terry and Bren Ings have let us know that the usual June weekend opening for Cerne Abbas gardens will now be happening on the 14th and 15th August and please check their website for more details.

In the meantime please all stay safe and we look forward to welcoming you back into the Hall on the 24th June (if Boris says that is ok!!)

 FW: IDHS newsletter - March/April 2021

With warmer weather on the way I thought I would take advantage of a cloudy day to update you all on various issues and decisions and plans.

Firstly thank you to all who attended our first Zoom meeting in February by Ray Broughton on What Show Judges Look For. He provided lots of useful advice on show judging but also some other helpful hints such as dealing with moss in lawns. One of the members kindly wrote up notes which are attached to this newsletter.

Last month we reported we had booked a stall at Frogham Fair where we planned to focus on selling plants given the cancellation  of our May plant sale. Sadly the organisers have decided they cannot go ahead with Frogham Fair as the date is to close to Covid release dates.

Plans for release from lockdown are progressing and we have been looking at how to restart the club. Some of our speakers that were booked have advised us that they are no longer doing talks so we have had to revise our programme.

We have decided to go ahead with our speaker in April via Zoom again and hopefully this is a topic that will appeal to more of you. Gerald Ponting is going to do a talk entitled “The Hampshire Calendar” at 7.30pm on Thursday April 29th  and the invite will be sent out in the week before.

As long as the plans for easing lockdown progress, we are planning on having our first meeting back in the hall on Thursday June 24th which will be an opportunity for members to get together over cake and tea or coffee, pick up the new membership card but there will be no speaker on this occasion. Speakers on a variety of topics have been confirmed for the rest of the year.

Dont forget, we have agreed those members that paid their £6 in 2020 will not be expected to pay again for 2021.

We are also moving to online banking for those of you that prefer to pay this way in the future.

We have had some changes on the committee and now looking for a speaker secretary who would book future speakers, confirm details before a meeting and welcome them on the night and thank them afterwards. If you are interested please get in touch with me

We are also looking for a new trip secretary from November so perhaps give this role some thought as well.

As you know from recent newsletters, the committee has been agonising over whether we can hold the Show this year as a lot of planning needs to start now. As a result of many discussions, we have taken the difficult decision to cancel the Show this year but watch this space as we are planning on doing something on the day.

Should you have a trophy awarded at the Show in 2019, please contact Di Barnaby on dianabarnaby59@gmail.com to arrange a return please.

In the meantime stay safe and well and look out for the invite to the April meeting on Zoom

IN HAMPSHIRE

I feel there is a bit more of an air of positivity for us all.  Although we are still not able to fully open our gardens , we still have some March gardens which you can visit if they are local to you.

It is still quite difficult to distribute our popular Yellow Hampshire Booklet, as many of our outlets do still not feel that they are able to display ‘unnecessary’ literature, and our Team Members are not yet able to travel outside their local area’s.  To help to overcome this in Hampshire,  our booklet is available as a pdf file, as a stop-gap until we can distribute our booklets as normal.  This is proving very popular.  You will notice a distinct difference in the booklet this year.  We felt that we should par back the booklet to its bare bones - all the information is there, but no advertisers or photo’s.  If you would like a copy of the Booklet in pdf format, please contact me and I will send it to you.

For March we have three gardens open in Hampshire, plus one pop-up opening.

Due to the current situation refreshments will not be available at any of our gardens throughout March.

IDHS February 2021 newsletter

For once as I write this, it is not raining outside and there are signs aplenty that Spring is on its way – daffodils and other bulbs coming up through the ground, new growth and birds beginning to set up their nests.

In addition, we have finally good news re Covid 19 that the vaccine is beginning to take effect and we may see the loosening of lockdown soon. We await to see what Boris’s plan is tomorrow but it appears that caution is still the watch word.

Your committee met last week and have made the painful but sensible decision, given its usual popularity, that it would be pretty impossible to socially distance the plant sale, to cancel the plant sale this May.

However, for those of you starting to plant seeds, we are planning on having our new marquee up at the Frogham Fair on Saturday 26th June and we will sell plants there.

We continue to have spirited discussions about the Show in September and have made the decision that our deadline  for decision making on this will be at our next committee meeting in March. We are exploring lots of ideas and if any members have helpful suggestions we would love to hear them.

Now for some good news!

Our next meeting is going to be on Zoom on Thursday 25th February (this week) at 19.30 hours. Many of you will have experience of using Zoom during lockdown so hopefully lots of you will join.

You just need to click on the link below and if you have used Zoom before you will enter the meeting. If you haven’t used it before, your computer will ask if you wish to load Zoom and the answer is yes, after a short delay, you will join our meeting. Just don’t forget to make sure your volume is on and your video is on (buttons to click will be on your screen )

I will be on the meeting by 19.15 so if you are not familiar, come on early and I can talk you through things or even ring you on the phone to get you connected.

If you don’t want to use your computer, you can still join the meeting on your phone by ringing one of the numbers which I will include, and entering the same meeting ID and passcode on your phone keypad. Sadly you wont be able to see the slides but you can hear the talk.

I will attempt to record the meeting so for those that miss it, you may get an option to hear it later!

So the details are as follows

National Gardens Scheme in Hampshire February 2021

IN HAMPSHIRE

Its been a while !!!  But on this bitterly cold day in early February, I thought what better time to think about Gardens !!

I am very aware that many of you are no longe able to hold your various meetings in person, but that you may still be keeping in touch by email or even Zoom.

Here at the National Garden Scheme, we are confident that we will be able to welcome visitors to our gardens again, with no restrictions - albeit  later in the year.  In fact you can still visit gardens now, as part of your daily exercise, providing that you keep local and do not travel out of your area.

We have two gardens opening in February for the Snowdrops:

Due to the current situation there will be no refreshments available at any of our gardens for February & March

LITTLE COURT    Crawley       Winchester     SO21 2PU

Opening: Sunday & Monday 14th  & 15th February  2pm to 4.30 pm:
Admission:  £5.00  children free.  Pre-Booked tickets only:

BRAMDEAN HOUSE:    Alresford      SO24 0JU

Opening:  Sunday 21st February  2pm to 4pm:
Admission:  £7.50  children free:  Pre-booked tickets only.

If you can’t make it to one of our current open gardens, and really need a ‘garden’ fix, why not visit our website and visit one of our 'Virtual Gardens’ https://ngs.org.uk/virtual-garden-visits/  (click on the link)   These are made up of gardens Nationwide, but there are a couple of little gems from Hampshire amongst the gardens on offer.  The gardens are divided into Sections, and under the heading Designers' Gardens, you will find:-
Old Camps      Newbury Road,   Headley     Thatcham      RG19 8LG

OR  Maybe you would appreciate viewing a series of village gardens in the Group Gardens.  From Hampshire we offer Froyle Gardens (from 2020).  These are  virtual tours of eight gardens, delightfully narrated by the Vicar of Froyle, Revd. Yann Dubreuil - you might like to sit down with a cup of tea for this one.  Froyle plan to open their gardens  once again this year, currently there are seven gardens taking part, and they plan to open in June.

FROYLE GARDENS     Lower Froyle     GU34 4LG

I am going to follow this email with another which will contain a pdf file of the Hampshire Yellow Book for 2021.  Including it here made the email file far too long.

If there is anyone who feels that their Groups will not be opening again and thus do not want these Newsletters, please just drop me an email and I will delete your details.

 Best Wishes
