IDHS Newsletter Nov/Dec 2022

 Dear Members,

This newsletter will cover both November and December as we see a new committee forming and only a short time between meetings.

Finally as I write we have a cold crisp day, a lovely respite from all the rain we have endured for weeks and hopefully it has encouraged you out into the garden to enjoy any remaining blooms!

Our December meeting is on Thursday 8th December at 7.30pm where we will have our Christmas Social. We will have a table garden related quiz (with a prize)  and raffle but no usual members competition. Instead we are asking you to decorate a cracker with natural materials which will be judged and a prize awarded.

We are asking everyone to bring a small plate of finger food, either sweet or savoury which we will all share. This worked well in June and reduced waste, increased variety and was enjoyed by many. We will be serving refreshments to go with this!

Your new membership cards for 2023 are ready and you can pay and collect your card at the meeting or should you prefer, we are offering alternatives. The cost this year is £10 per person and can be paid by cash or cheque (payable to IDHS) either at a meeting or sent to Mr Alan Milburn at 65, Parsonage Barn Lane, Ringwood, BH24 1PT

or by online banking using the following details:

Account Name: Ibsley and District Horticultural Society

Sort Code: 30-96-26

Account number: 42436068

Please put your surname in the reference box

Monday, 7 November 2022

Our next meeting is on:
November 24th, 2022 at 7.30 pm
Ibsley Village Hall BH24 3NL

The topic is 'The WIld Flowers of Crete' - it is preceded by our AGM... BUT, don't let that put you off, we have perfected the brisk AGM it will be very short and sweet. The talk will be colourful and inspiring, just the thing for cheering up a November evening.

IDHS Newsletter October 2022

Hopefully you are enjoying this mild weather and welcome rain although more is needed to restore streams

back to previous levels.

It was lovely to see so many of you at our last meeting with Andy McIndoe and we welcomed a number of new members.

Our next meeting is on Thursday 27th October when we have Wilf Simcox coming to give us a talk on Conservatory Plants.

Please remember to enter the members competition – details on your membership cards

There will be the usual raffle and refreshments at 50p for a tea or coffee.

Julie Cole and Debbie King are doing refreshments this month.

The show committee for 2023 is meeting shortly and they are keen to get children entering the show as they are our gardeners of the future. If any of you have ideas of how to attract children please send us an email.

Just a reminder that next month is our AGM but it only lasts for about 10 minutes and papers will be sent out to you a week earlier.

In December (8th December) we will be having a members competition to decorate a Christmas cracker with things from your garden, so you may need to start collecting now. We will also have a quiz and the social. We will once again ask you all to bring a small plate of food either savoury or sweet which can be shared. This way definitely reduces waste, keeps club costs down and provides lots of variety.

Looking forward to seeing you all on Thursday

IDHS Newsletter September 2022

Thank you to everyone that supported the Show and a very big Thank you to Di Barnaby and her team of helpers who made it such a great success. Planning has already started for 2023! If anyone would like to volunteer to join the show sub committee to start work on the schedule, Di would love to hear from you.

Our next meeting is this Thursday -29th September at 7.30pm when we will be welcoming Andrew McIndoe to talk to us on the Creative Shrub Garden. There will be plants for sale and a raffle to include a signed copy of one of his many books.

Refreshments will be done by Minnie McKay and Jenny Curry, two new members, and we will have the usual members competition.

There is an entry charge of £5 for any non members for this meeting to help cover speaker costs. Tickets will be available on the door.

Our secretary John Humphry, who has done a sterling job for good number of years, has decided to step down at our AGM in November so we are looking for a new secretary. Please consider joining the committee to help out. The job primarily involves sending out this newsletter, keeping minutes of committee meetings and the AGM, and being the link for Hampshire and Dorset Federations & the RHS for all external communications.

We are looking forward to seeing you on Thursday

IDHS newsletter August 2022

Following the Chair's email out to all members last month, we were delighted with the response both in terms of support generally for the club and also with members coming forward to join the committee for next year.

Mention in the email was also made of the financial challenges ahead and we are delighted to also report that we have successfully bid for a County Councillor grant of £500 which is to support an advertising campaign and provide limited funding towards speaker costs for 2023. Both of these are very positive for the club and more details will follow later.

Our next meeting is this Thursday – 18th August (earlier than normal due to the Art Studio weeks) At 7.30pm we welcome Ray Broughton on Sustainable Gardening which will hopefully complement the speaker last month.

We will have the usual members competition (remember points mean cups at the end of the year) and raffle.

Refreshments are being provided by Sandy Dingle and Julie Cole.

Sadly, as a result of insufficient numbers, we have had to cancel our garden trip to the Chelsea Physic Garden but are busy planning some new ideas for 2023.

Don't forget to pick up your free members  tickets for Andrew McIndoe's talk on the 29th September and why not pick up tickets for friends, neighbours and family at £5 each.

Now fast approaching is our Show – Saturday 10th September. Hopefully all your Antirrhinums are flourishing and you are planning to enter the members competition. Don't forget it is not just fruit, vegetables and flower classes, we have home produce, photography, classes for children and some novice classes for those new to entering exhibits.  Have a look at the schedule and pick what you are going to enter by Wednesday 7th September.

Please pick up posters to put on fences or in cars to advertise the show far and wide.

Di is waiting to hear from you if you have plants or bric-a-brac at the Show that you wish to sell – dianabarnaby59@hotmail.com / 07799 327747

Finally if there are any members that would be willing to pick up Dee Grierson who has moved to Parsonage Barn Lane, please reply to this email and we will put you in touch with each other.

Looking forward to seeing you all THIS Thursday.

IDHS newsletter - July 2022

Hopefully you are now all enjoying the slightly cooler weather.

Last week's very high temperatures will have produced challenges for many gardeners and hopefully we shall get lots of hints and tips from our speaker this Thursday at 7.30pm. Sally Morgan is coming to talk on “ Climate Friendly Gardening”
We shall have our usual raffle, refreshments and members competition, so please come and enjoy the evening. Roshan Humphry and Chris Withey have kindly offered to do refreshments.

This will be your final chance to book a ticket to go to Chelsea Physic Garden by coach on Thursday 15th September. The cost is £30, but currently we only have 8 people signed up.

Don’t forget to also invite your friends and neighbours to our Celebrity Speaker - Andrew McIndoe - who is our speaker on Thursday 29th September. He is giving us a talk on "The Creative Shrub Garden”. Tickets are £5 for non-members while members are free entry - please remember to pick up your tickets.

Thank you to those who came to our June meeting and brought along a plate of food. It seems that the majority enjoyed the variety of delights on offer. We are pleased to say that we noted a dramatic reduction in food waste.

Our Show is fast approaching ( Saturday September 10th) and I am sure many of you are planning your entries having picked up the schedule. Di Barnaby (07799 327747 or dianabarnaby59@gmail.com) is hoping for offers of 12 cakes to serve on the day. Di also needs to know if you have plants or bric-a-brac which we might sell at the Show.

Looking forward to seeing you all on Thursday

IDHS newsletter June 2022

I hope you have all enjoyed the lovely weather and hopefully there will be more to come.

I start this newsletter with some sad news. Both Hilary Howell and Jill Paynter ( members of the Club for sometime) passed away in May. Sincere condolences on behalf of you all have been sent to both families.

Our meeting on Thursday 30th June at 7.30 pm is to hear Chris Bird talk about The White Garden.

There will be the usual raffle and members competition and instead of the usual refreshments we have our Summer Social.
We are asking everyone to bring a small plate of finger food either savoury or sweet which we will put out in the committee room to all share after the talk. We will have a lovely summer punch to quench your thirst.

Amanda Palmer and Wendy Ash will be sorting refreshments but more volunteers would be helpful please.

Changes to our programme:

Sadly our Celebrity Speaker Andy McIndoe had double booked and will be in Ireland in July. We have however rebooked him for September 29th. It will be a ticketed event free for members and £5 for guests. Please spread the word as he is an excellent but expensive speaker!

We have also booked Sally Morgan to come and talk to us in July. She will be talking about "Climate Friendly Gardening."

Garden Visits

Thank you to those who came to Durmast House. Hopefully you found it enjoyable.

Our next visit is on Thursday September 15th to the Chelsea Physic Garden - a coach trip to London, entry ticket and a guided tour for
£30. Forms were attached last month to the newsletter and will be available at the meeting next week.

We are setting a cut off date of 1st August as we need to determine whether the numbers are viable for the trip to go ahead so please book seats quickly and tell your friends.
For further details contact Vicky Coral on 01425 472034 or vicky.coral@hotmail.co.uk

New committee members

Several current members are stepping down in November so please think about joining your committee so the club can continue. Speak to any of your committee members to find out more.

Looking forward to seeing you on Thursday

IDHS newsletter May 2022

Firstly thank you to all of you who supported our plant sale either by selling produce, helping out on the day and coming to buy the wonderful plants and bric-a-brac. We raised just over £400, perhaps not as much as some years but a really good effort after two years of lockdown.

Our next meeting is this Thursday when we welcome back Dave Ewers for part 2 of his Woodcraft Demonstrations and Talk. Part 1 back in 2019 was very well recieved so we should be in for a great evening.
We will have the usual raffle, members competition and seed swap.
Refreshments are being done by Chris Withey and Vicky Coral.

Don’t forget to sign up for our next garden visit to Durmast House in Burley on Thursday 16th June at 2pm. The cost is £10 which includes a guided tour and cream tea.

It is time to pick up your free ticket for our evening with our Celebrity Speaker, Andrew McIndoe, on Thursday 28th July when he will talk about The Creative Shrub Garden. Entry will be by ticket only - free to members and £5 for guests so please get tickets for friends, neighbours and family and don’t forget your member ticket!

You will also be able to sign up for our coach trip to the Chelsea Physic Garden on Thursday September 15th. The cost is £30 which includes the return coach to London, entry to the Gardens and a guided tour. We have 53 places so please bring friends and family.

We have been asked if we have any members interested in being part of a team judging three allotment sites in Ringwood. This will be end of June, early July. If anyone is interested please contact Sally on sally.bonynge@sky.com  or 01425 473082 for more information.

Looking forward to seeing you on Thursday
