IDHS newsletter - July 2022

Hopefully you are now all enjoying the slightly cooler weather.

Last week's very high temperatures will have produced challenges for many gardeners and hopefully we shall get lots of hints and tips from our speaker this Thursday at 7.30pm. Sally Morgan is coming to talk on “ Climate Friendly Gardening”
We shall have our usual raffle, refreshments and members competition, so please come and enjoy the evening. Roshan Humphry and Chris Withey have kindly offered to do refreshments.

This will be your final chance to book a ticket to go to Chelsea Physic Garden by coach on Thursday 15th September. The cost is £30, but currently we only have 8 people signed up.

Don’t forget to also invite your friends and neighbours to our Celebrity Speaker - Andrew McIndoe - who is our speaker on Thursday 29th September. He is giving us a talk on "The Creative Shrub Garden”. Tickets are £5 for non-members while members are free entry - please remember to pick up your tickets.

Thank you to those who came to our June meeting and brought along a plate of food. It seems that the majority enjoyed the variety of delights on offer. We are pleased to say that we noted a dramatic reduction in food waste.

Our Show is fast approaching ( Saturday September 10th) and I am sure many of you are planning your entries having picked up the schedule. Di Barnaby (07799 327747 or dianabarnaby59@gmail.com) is hoping for offers of 12 cakes to serve on the day. Di also needs to know if you have plants or bric-a-brac which we might sell at the Show.

IDHS newsletter June 2022

I hope you have all enjoyed the lovely weather and hopefully there will be more to come.

I start this newsletter with some sad news. Both Hilary Howell and Jill Paynter ( members of the Club for sometime) passed away in May. Sincere condolences on behalf of you all have been sent to both families.

Our meeting on Thursday 30th June at 7.30 pm is to hear Chris Bird talk about The White Garden.

There will be the usual raffle and members competition and instead of the usual refreshments we have our Summer Social.

We are asking everyone to bring a small plate of finger food either savoury or sweet which we will put out in the committee room to all share after the talk. We will have a lovely summer punch to quench your thirst.

Amanda Palmer and Wendy Ash will be sorting refreshments but more volunteers would be helpful please.

Changes to our programme:

Sadly our Celebrity Speaker Andy McIndoe had double booked and will be in Ireland in July. We have however rebooked him for September 29th. It will be a ticketed event free for members and £5 for guests. Please spread the word as he is an excellent but expensive speaker!

We have also booked Sally Morgan to come and talk to us in July. She will be talking about "Climate Friendly Gardening."

Garden Visits

Thank you to those who came to Durmast House. Hopefully you found it enjoyable.

Our next visit is on Thursday September 15th to the Chelsea Physic Garden - a coach trip to London, entry ticket and a guided tour for

£30. Forms were attached last month to the newsletter and will be available at the meeting next week.

We are setting a cut off date of 1st August as we need to determine whether the numbers are viable for the trip to go ahead so please book seats quickly and tell your friends.

IDHS newsletter May 2022

Firstly thank you to all of you who supported our plant sale either by selling produce, helping out on the day and coming to buy the wonderful plants and bric-a-brac. We raised just over £400, perhaps not as much as some years but a really good effort after two years of lockdown.

Our next meeting is this Thursday when we welcome back Dave Ewers for part 2 of his Woodcraft Demonstrations and Talk. Part 1 back in 2019 was very well recieved so we should be in for a great evening.
We will have the usual raffle, members competition and seed swap.
Refreshments are being done by Chris Withey and Vicky Coral.

Don’t forget to sign up for our next garden visit to Durmast House in Burley on Thursday 16th June at 2pm. The cost is £10 which includes a guided tour and cream tea.

It is time to pick up your free ticket for our evening with our Celebrity Speaker, Andrew McIndoe, on Thursday 28th July when he will talk about The Creative Shrub Garden. Entry will be by ticket only - free to members and £5 for guests so please get tickets for friends, neighbours and family and don’t forget your member ticket!

You will also be able to sign up for our coach trip to the Chelsea Physic Garden on Thursday September 15th. The cost is £30 which includes the return coach to London, entry to the Gardens and a guided tour. We have 53 places so please bring friends and family.

We have been asked if we have any members interested in being part of a team judging three allotment sites in Ringwood. This will be end of June, early July. If anyone is interested please contact Sally on sally.bonynge@sky.com  or 01425 473082 for more information.

IDHS Newsletter - March 2022

 

I hope you are all enjoying this lovely weather and as you are splitting plants, spare a thought for any excess stock that we can have for the plant sale! We will have a table for plant donations should you not want your own table.

 

We are gradually seeing our membership creeping up and our last meeting saw the most attendees since we restarted.

 

We have a change of speaker for our next meeting as Janelle has had to pull out for personal reasons. Our new speaker on Thursday 31st March at 7.30pm is Marion Catt, speaking on “A Mixed Bunch” - stories surrounding everyday flowers we use.

 

We also have the Seed Swap - a great opportunity to try growing something new. Bring unwanted seeds to swap or leave a donation to the club for anything you take.

Refreshments are being delivered by Roshan Humphry and Diane Cecil this month

 

It will be your last chance to sign up for our first garden visit on April 21st at 2pm to Spinners in Lymington. The entrance is £7 and includes refreshments.

 

A local neighbour has donated a quantity of bearded Irises which will be available at the meeting, please bring a bag if you would like some.

Meet at Ibsley Village Hall at 12.45pm, or if you are going direct at 2pm at Spinners Garden entrance (SO41 5QE). We must meet and then get our tickets as a group to get the discounted price. Maps will be provided for those driving from Ibsley Village Hall.

It was lovely to see more people at our meeting and a big welcome to some new members. We were entertained by Andrew Harris who came again to talk about trees – tips, equipment and knots. A big thank you to those who performed as trees!

IDHS Newsletter - December2021

It was lovely to see some different members at our November AGM and meeting where we were entertained by Dr Francis Burroughs talking about his father and his life in gardening at the beginning of the 1900s.

For those of you not at the AGM there are a few decisions you need to be aware of

• It was unanimously agreed that Terry and Bren Ings should be asked to become Life Members of the club given their years of dedication and hard work supporting the club.
• The decision to increase membership fees to £10 was accepted (in light of increased speakers fees and travel costs and hall costs)
• Following a presentation by your Treasurer, Alan Milburn it was agreed to alter the constitution to cease annual audit of the accounts

Our next meeting is fast approaching and we are delighted that Sandy Dingle can finally give us Part 2 of a Story of Christmas and hopefully you will join us to hear her exciting talk and partake of some food and Christmas punch.  We will be meeting on Thursday 9^th December at 7.30pm and will be seating you at tables of six with the food on the table to reduce infection risks.

There will be a raffle as usual and our last competition this year for members will be a table decoration. (There will be no usual members competition). We are hoping for a quiz for the night from our ever popular quiz master – Pat Mouland

You can pick up your new membership cards at the meeting.

IDHS November newsletter

It is that time of year again which sees IDHS undertaking its AGM. As usual the plan is to make it brief and therefore it would be very helpful if members could read all the reports (attached) and come with any questions.

 It has been lovely to welcome members back but numbers remain small – we had 20 people at last months talk all well spaced and in a well ventilated hall.

It would be great to hear back from you if you have any questions on your safety or suggestions about how we can make you feel safe to return.

 

As well as the AGM on Thursday 25^th November at 7.30pm we are delighted to welcome back Andrew Harris who gave us a very entertaining talk on Tree Surgery last time and we have more tales and tips from him this time.

We will also have your new membership cards ready for collection at £10 per member with details of all our talks in 2022 and three exciting garden trips.

Plans for Our December Meeting (9^th December)

Your committee have been thinking through ideas on how to continue with the social as safely as possible. The members competition in December will be a table decoration, so get planning now!  Should anyone want a small dish and oasis, Sue Hooper will have some for sale at the November meeting for 50p (proceeds to the club)

Our Christmas speaker will be Sandy Dingle who will be continuing  “The Story of Christmas”

Other News:

We had some very successful willow workshops in September which were very productive and enjoyable. A big thank you to our facilitator Jacqui and Di and Alan for managing the day.

 

Ray and Pauline Wells have recommended a visit to the New Forest Lavender Farm out at Giles Lane, Landford, SP5 2BG where we have previously had a members visit. The grounds have been (largely) converted in the last 12 months into a magnificent series of gardens and at this time the Dahlias and Zinnias, along with other perennials are a sight to behold. Well worth £4.00 to enter and the café does excellent snacks.

Best to watch opening times after end of month (reduced days/hours) and the attached nursery is closed from 1^st October.

 

Donhead Hall in Shaftesbury SP7 9DS is open as part of the NGS scheme this Sunday 3^rd October and well worth a visit.

 

We have now started to plan for next years show on 10th September 2022 and Di is looking for stewards and helpers – we will need about 15 people. If you are able to help please let Di know on dianabarnaby59@gmail.com

Finally, the committee have been reviewing the cost of membership in light of increasing speakers costs and travel costs and have decided that the subscription should rise to £10 per year from 1^st January 2022. This equates to approx. 83p per meeting which we believe still represents good value.

 It was lovely top see some members returning to our meeting in July and hopefully even more will return for our August meeting.

Our next meeting is Thursday August 19^th at 7.30pm where Ben Turner will be returning and transporting us to The Magical Gardens of Tresco. There will also be plants and books for sale from Ben.

IDHS Newsletter July 2021

 Having just listened to the latest news it is looking very hopeful that our meeting will go ahead on Thursday 29^th July at 7.30pm when we have Tom Maskell coming to speak to us on “Vegetables – Success on the Plot”.

There will be a further email in the week of the meeting confirming what arrangements will be in place.

In the meantime there is some other news:

It is with sadness that the Club has recently heard of the death of former member Joan Lumley. Joan, who was well into her nineties, died in the middle of June and had been unwell for some time, living in a care home near one of her sons in London. She was a longstanding member of IDHS and was on the Committee for many years . At one time she was the Secretary. Joan contributed many plants for the plant sale and was a keen gardener. When she found heavy gardening too difficult  she put her artistic talents into photography and won the Dapson Cup for Photography   the  very first time it was introduced into the IDHS Show. Thank you Joan for your input into the Club and for happy memories.

 44^th Cerne Abbas Open Gardens

Each year we have held Open Gardens in June but this year we delayed to the weekend of 14th & 15th August. It now seems that life will have returned to near normal by then.

Preparations are well underway and we have more than 20 gardens that plan to be open including a number of new ones and, as we have never before opened in August, even the remainder will look very different.

The cost of a Day ticket for all the gardens is £7 and a Two Day ticket £10 with accompanied children free.

There will be a plant stall and a free car park (DT2 7GD) from 11am and Teas in St Marys Church from 1.30pm.

Willow Workshops on Saturday 11^th September

There will be three different workshops and these will be on a first come first served basis and you can book a space now. Price includes tuition, all the materials and tea or coffee

These are being offered to members first and if places are available after the end of July, we will offer to non members at an increased price of £5 per workshop. Places are only booked when we receive your payment and form.

Don’t forget to add your name into the reference part for online banking so we can link the payment with your form. IDHS June Newsletter

Sadly our plans to hold a meeting on the 24^th June have been scuppered with no relaxation of Covid rules. Our thanks go to Terry and Bren Ings and Sandy Larkin for offering assistance with the refreshments and also to those members who offered cakes.

 

However we are now moving ahead, hoping for a change in the rules on July 19^th which will see us holding a meeting on Thursday 29^th July at 7.30pm when we will have Tom Maskell delivering a talk on “Vegetables- success on the plot”.

We will still plan to have plants for sale for club funds and an opportunity to pick up membership cards.

 

As you are aware, we are not holding our Annual Show this year however on Saturday 11^th September we will be holding some exciting willow workshops.

There will be three different workshops and these will be on a first come first served basis and you can book a space now. Price includes tuition, all the materials and tea or coffee

Workshop One:                   10-11.30       Make a willow dragonfly             Cost: £25

 

Workshop Two:                  12-13.30       Make a bird feeder cone              Cost: £25

 

Workshop Three:               14.00-17.00 Make a willow obelisk                  Cost: £35

 

These are being offered to members first and if places are available after the end of July, we will offer to non members at an increased price of £5 per workshop. Places are only booked when we receive your payment and form.

Plant & Garden Fairs
Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens

Admission is free to Plant Heritage Members. Public admission is £7.00 on the day and this includes free access to the Gardens (normally £10). The Plant Fair runs from 10am – 3am and tickets must be booked in advance, to comply with Govt. Guidelines on numbers attending events:

The Gardens remain open until 5pm. Nursery/Craft Stalls will be accepting a mix of cash & card payments; please bring your own bags or boxes for plants. The Shop, Restaurant and Abbotsbury Plant Sales area are card only.

We have at least 18 plant & craft stalls confirmed and will have a very wide range of plants, including the unusual, exotic & difficult to find.

50% of the takings will go towards Plant Conservation, education and other projects in Dorset. We are grateful to the Management of Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens for supporting our Charity.
